B.Sc Dialysis Technology

In a healthy human body, kidneys are responsible for purifying the blood. When the kidneys fail, they are unable to carry out this purification process. This is when dialysis process comes handy! When natural purification of blood (by kidneys) stops, it becomes necessary to intervene and perform artificial purification using a Dialysis machine.

A dialysis technician is a person who has been trained to operate the hemodialysis machine and carry out pre, intra and post dialysis procedures. The tasks of a Dialysis Technician include:

  • Setting up dialysis machine
  • Preparing sterilization mix
  • Recording vital body stats of the patient (temperature, blood pressure, age, pulse rate and weight)
  • Monitoring the patient
  • Guiding the patient and communicating with him/her
  • Administering anaesthesia (as per requirement)
  • Operate dialysis machine
  • Supervise dialysis process
  • Calculating blood flow
  • Cleaning and inspection of dialysis machine
Scope / Opportunities

Dialysis technology graduates may find a job at hospitals (Government or private), clinics or healthcare setups offering dialysis treatment. Some of the fast growing stand-alone Dialysis Clinic Chains are NephroLife, NephroPlus, Sparsh and DaVita, These corporate chains offer plenty of job opportunities.

Usually Dialysis Technologists work in a team under the supervision of qualified Doctors and don titles like ‘Dialysis Supervisor’, ‘Dialysis Manager’ or ‘Dialysis Therapist’. Besides work in clinical settings, opportunities are also available with Dialysis Equipment manufactures like Fresenius Medical Care in technical & marketing teams.

B.Sc Radiology & Imaging Technology

Diagnostic Radiology is the technique and process used to create images of the human body for diagnosis of medical conditions. Students of Radiology & Imaging Technology are trained in:

  • Diagnostic radiography (which deals with examination of internal organs, bones, cavities and foreign objects)
  • Sonography (which uses high frequency sound and is used in obstetrics [including fetal monitoring throughout pregnancy], abdominal imaging, musculoskeletal imaging.
  • Fluoroscopy live motion radiography (which is used to visualize the digestive system; monitor the administration of contrast agents to highlight vessels and organs or to help position devices within the body).
  • Computed Axial Tomography (which provides cross-sectional views (slices) of the body; can also reconstruct additional images from those taken to provide more information in either 2 or 3D).
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (which builds a 2-D or 3-D map of different tissue types within the body).
  • Nuclear Medicine (which uses radioactive tracers which can be administered to examine how the body and organs function, for example the kidneys or heart).
  • Mammography (which use low dose x-ray systems to produce images of the human mammary glands).
Scope / Opportunities

The advent of advanced radiologic technology like CAT Scan, MRI and Ultrasound has spurred a revolution in medical imaging. Medical Science is now highly dependent on Medical Imaging for accurate diagnosis. CAT Scan and Ultrasound equipment are a standard installation in any medium-sized hospital in India today. Besides this, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of independent diagnostic scan centers in every city and little town. Due to this, there is a burgeoning demand for well-trained Radiology Technologists and graduates of a degree program in Radiology Technology find employment with ease. Students with an instinct to learn can do higher studies in specialized field of study and can progress as scientists and even can enjoy faculty positions in academic institutions. Without a doubt, a career in Radiology Technology offers a promising future, job stability and a good salary.

Curriculum

The curriculum covers instruction in Human Anatomy and Physiology, Pathology, General Physics, Radiation Physics, Clinical Radiography, Modern Imaging Techniques & Recent trends in Imaging, Radiation Biology & Radiation Safety.

Course Duration

3 years + 1 year of Internship

Eligibility

Pass in + 2 with 40 % minimum marks in Physics, Chemistry & Biology.

Selection Procedure

Applicants will be short-listed and successful candidates invited for a personal interview. Selection of candidates will be based on +2 marks and performance in the personal interview.

B.Sc Operation Theater & Anesthesia Technology

Operation Theater and Anesthesia Technologists is an allied health professional who assits the surgeon and anesthetist in the operation theater with the surgical procedure. Working under the direction of the surgeon and anesthetist, the OT Technologist is a vital member of the surgical team. The task of the OT & Anesthesia Technologist consists of:

  • Preparing the Operating Theatre & equipment required to perform surgery.
  • Work closely with the Surgeon and assist him in the surgical procedure.
  • Assisting the Anesthetist in the acquisition, preparation, and application of various types of equipment required for the delivery of anesthesia care.
  • Preparing and assisting in the delivery of Anesthetic medication in the right dosages to the patient.
  • Overseeing the smooth functioning of clinical equipment used during surgery and post- operative care.
  • Explaining procedures, observing and positioning patients, and using protection devices to ensure safety and comfort during treatment.
Scope / Opportunities

According to WHO estimates, there are 954 surgical procedures being done in India for every 100,000 population. By this estimate, the surgical field in India is still vastly under-utilized as the comparative figures in 2910 /100,000 population in China and 6168 / 100,000 population in Brazil.

Government-sponsored Health Insurance Programmes like the CM’s Comprehenive Health Insurance Scheme in Tamil Nadu and Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) in the rest of the country provide coverage for surgeries in private hospitals. With this, the number of surgical procedures done across the country has increased significantly. According to data from the National Health Mission, the number of major surgeries increased to 979 % in Maharashtra, 470 % in Karnataka and 400 % in Bihar since 2009.

With expansion in health services in general and surgical care in particular, there is a burgeoning demand for trained technologists to provide support to surgeons & anesthetists in hospital operation theaters both in the private and government sector.

The first successful surgical procedure performed with Anesthesia was in 1846 at Massachusetts General Hospital. The introduction of Anesthesia has revolutionized modern Surgery. But, administration of Anesthesia requires a great deal of skill & practice. Trained personnel in the field of Anesthesia to assist the Anesthetists in the operation theater are in great demand and this demand is only likely to increase in the coming years.

Operation Theater & Anesthesia Technologist are being deployed in various surgical specialties like: General Surgery,Surgical Gastroenterology, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, ENT Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology and Orthopedic Surgery.

Operation Theater Technologists are currently employed in major hospitals in the country like Narayana Hrudalaya (Bengaluru), Madras Medical Mission (Chennai), Global Hospitals (Chennai), Medanta Hospitals (Gurgaon) etc.
